AI Latest: Google’s Chips Reach Orbit, arXiv Caps Papers in the AI Era, and Reddit Tightens Its Data Gate

Space, science and the open web: three stories on how AI is straining the systems around it.

Google’s Project Suncatcher satellite reaches orbit

On Thursday, a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket carried Google’s first Project Suncatcher satellite into orbit. The refrigerator-sized prototype holds four of Google’s Tensor Processing Units, the chips it uses for AI. Google said it confirmed contact with the satellite and that it is operating as expected.

The goal is modest. The chips will run an AI model for short stretches, about 15 minutes at a time, before they must stop and cool down, since heat is hard to shed in a vacuum. Google will use the data to learn how the chips handle launch, radiation and heat. It plans two more experimental satellites in 2027 to test laser links between satellites.

Why it matters: Orbital data centers are still a long shot, and one analyst has argued the economics don’t work. But Google now has real hardware data instead of just a research paper.

arXiv limits authors to two papers a month

The research preprint server arXiv began limiting each submitter to two papers per calendar month on October 1, with no more than three active submissions at a time. arXiv says AI tools are speeding up research but also fueling a surge of low-quality papers that overwhelms its volunteer moderators. Reports put September submissions at a record of about 40,000, roughly double the level of two years earlier.

Scholars are split. Some say it will push authors toward quality over quantity. Critics say it can hurt researchers who finish several legitimate papers at once while doing little to stop determined spammers. arXiv calls the cap a stopgap and says it hopes to raise or remove it once moderation tools improve.

Why it matters: Generative AI is making content cheap to produce, and even the scientific record is feeling the strain. Other journals and repositories may follow.

Reddit tightens access to its data

Reddit is shutting down its RSS feeds, moving apps and bots to its Developer Platform and limiting access to Old Reddit, according to a trade report. That makes it harder to collect Reddit conversations in bulk, which matters for AI search and answer tools that draw on them. The report notes the changes don’t necessarily cut Reddit out of AI answers.

Why it matters: Platforms with valuable human conversation are tightening who can use it for AI. Details here come from a single trade source, so check Reddit’s own announcement before publishing.
