AI Roundup: Meta’s Muse Takes Off, the Pope Weighs In, and Google Sends AI Chips to Space

Beyond the White House and OpenAI headlines, three more stories are shaping the AI conversation this week.

Meta’s Muse agent surges, and Meta goes after businesses

Meta’s AI agent, Muse, launched on September 8 and has climbed quickly. Sensor Tower estimates put it above 3.4 million downloads by late last week, and daily active users rose 27% the day after Meta’s Connect conference. At Connect, Meta showed a keychain-sized device called Muse Charm, plus lighter VR glasses, and said Muse will come to its smart glasses in the coming months.

This week Meta added a business push. It launched a Meta Enterprise Platform to sell its models and agents to companies, with MongoDB’s CEO reported to lead it, and a Muse for Small Business that connects to tools like Slack, Zoom, Canva and Meta’s ad accounts.

Why it matters: Meta started behind OpenAI, Anthropic and Google. Muse gives it a consumer agent people actually use, though it still has to show a way to make money from it.

Pope Leo XIV: AI doom concerns are not “fake news”

Speaking to reporters on the papal flight home from France on September 28, Pope Leo XIV said the concerns raised by AI experts should be taken seriously and are not “fake news.” His remarks were a response to Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, who has argued that market forces are enough to govern AI and that safety fears are overblown.

Why it matters: The Vatican is positioning itself as a moral voice on AI. It adds to pressure on the industry as leaders split between calling for coordinated limits and rejecting them.

Google plans to launch AI chips into orbit

Google says it will launch its first AI chips into orbit next week under Project Suncatcher, an experiment testing whether space could one day host data centers powered by near-constant sunlight. The idea responds to a real bottleneck: AI’s growing demand for electricity and land on Earth.

Why it matters: This is a test, not a working data center. Cooling, launch costs and radiation are big open questions, but it shows how far companies will go to get more computing power.
